Fart gas is
generally lighter than air. Because it typically contains high concentrations of hydrogen and methane (which are lighter than nitrogen-dominated air), farts tend to be less dense, allowing the gas mixture to rise. While smellier farts can contain heavier sulfurous compounds, the overall mixture is still typically lighter than ambient air.
Composition: Farts are made of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane, oxygen, and hydrogen.
Density: The methane (
) component has a molecular weight of roughly 16 g/mol, while air is roughly 29 g/mol, making it lighter.
Behavior: Farts rise and dissipate, rather than sinking to the floor.
Weight Impact: Because the gas is lighter than air, you technically become slightly lighter, but your body also gains a tiny bit of upward buoyancy when you pass wind.
